In advisory class, 8th graders have explored and researched their high school options and have identified why specific schools might be a good fit for them.
Later this year, students will receive an offer from one of the schools that they applied to. The high school will call you to invite you and your child to a new student orientation. At this orientation, you and your child will have the opportunity to meet the school staff, receive your child’s schedule for September, and fill out necessary new student paperwork.
To guide you through this visit. here are a list of suggested questions you may ask during your visit:
- What is the average class size?
- What is this school’s approach to student discipline and safety?
- How much homework do students have?
- How is technology used to support teaching and learning at this school?
- What extracurricular opportunities (sports, clubs, community service, competitions) are available for students?
- How does this school support students who have academic, social, or emotional difficulties?
- What strategies are used to teach students who are not fluent in English?
- Where do students go after they graduate? How many attend a four-year college? Are graduates prepared for college?
- How will this school prepare me for the workforce?
- Is there a uniform policy?
7th-grade students have begun exploring their career interests and learning about the high school process through a 3-part series of advisory lessons facilitated by Ms. Felix. Between now and June, Ms. Felix will be pushing into advisory to introduce high school exploration to our current 7th graders.
If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s high school placement or the high school articulation process, please contact Ms. Felix at mfelix@schools.nyc.gov
